Alamance Regional’s Congestive Heart Failure Clinic helps patients learn to manage congestive heart failure, improve the quality of life, and reduce the risk of future health complications. Our program focuses on proper nutrition, exercise, medication, and daily weight monitoring. The clinic serves both newly diagnosed heart failure patients as well as those who have had heart failure for a number of years. Valet parking is now available for patients of the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic and volunteers are available to escort patients. (Back to Heart and Vascular Center main page

What is congestive heart failure?
Congestive heart failure is the inability of the heart to pump blood through the body at a rate that meets the body’s needs.  Sometimes this causes congestion, a buildup of fluid in the lungs and other parts of the body. The disease usually develops slowly and often follows an injury to the heart caused by a heart attack, high blood pressure, or a heart-valve abnormality. Common symptoms of congestive heart failure include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing when lying down, feeling tired, weight gain and swelling in the legs and ankles.

An Experienced Staff
The staff of the Congestive Heart Failure Clinic includes a nurse practitioner, an office manager, and a cardiologist who serves as the program’s medical director.  Staff members work closely with each client’s primary care physician and cardiologist to determine the best medication, diet, and exercise plan possible.

A Comprehensive Program
The Clinic works to optimize the use of medical treatments proven to benefit clients with heart failure.  As a participant in the program, the patient learns

  • Causes of heart failure
  • Importance of daily weights
  • Medication use
  • Benefits of a low sodium diet
