Clinical Pastoral Education
Alamance Regional’s Pastoral Care and Counseling Department supports clinical pastoral counseling education by providing full- and part-time internships and a residency program. Interns get hands-on experience in the hospital environment and gain valuable insights by working with experienced chaplains and helping people facing significant emotional and spiritual stress.
Our educational programs provide Level I, Level II and Supervisory Education CPE as an Accredited Center for Clinical Pastoral Education by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). Visit the ACPE website for more information.

Full-time Extended Level I/II CPE residency
The Residency program offers three units of CPE over a 12-month period. CPE Residents serve in the hospital on Monday – Friday, providing pastoral care and counseling to patients, families and staff. The CPE Resident will also serve as On Call Chaplain.
At the completion of the 12 month Residency, the CPE Resident will be better equipped for board certification through the Association of Professional Chaplains. A competitive stipend is offered and meals are provided while on call. Admission to the Residency program requires the applicant to have completed a minimum of one unit of CPE. Applicants are considered on an open enrollment basis as positions are available.
Full-time Level I CPE internship, summer
CPE Interns are in the hospital five days a week for 11 weeks providing pastoral care and counseling to patients, families and staff. CPE Interns serve as On Call Chaplain. Lunch is provided free each day the student is in the hospital, as well as all meals while on call. This program begins the last week of May and runs through the first week of August.
Part-time Extended Level I CPE internship, fall and spring

This unique program is designed to provide a unique opportunity for those committed to ministry to learn pastoral care and counseling skills from a clinical perspective while still serving in another ministry/work setting. As a means to provide flexibility, the CPE Intern develops their hospital visitation schedule to their assigned clinical areas in collaboration with the Department’s Director. Up to six clinical hours per week may be in a parish setting as negotiated with the director. The CPE Intern also serves as On Call Chaplain. Meals are provided while on call.
- The fall unit begins the last week of August and runs through the third week of December.
- The spring unit begins in the second week of January and runs through the first week of May.
